JEFFERSON CITY (AP) — Agriculture and mining industries could gain more influence over Missouri's water regulations under legislation awaiting the governor's approval.

The Legislature voted this month to allow industry-backed commissioners to replace public representatives on the Clean Water Commission.

Some in the agriculture community criticized the commission for revoking a permit for a feed lot slated for construction near Trenton. Commissioners said the company had not proven it had enough assets to clean up a possible accident.

All seven commissioners are serving on expired terms. If Nixon does not appoint new commissioners by the time he leaves office in January, the bill would allow his successor to draw more commissioners from the industries they regulate.
