An attorney from Mexico is facing charges Friday in the hit-and-run death of Richard Cobb.

Police arrested 38-year-old James A. Clampitt earlier Friday morning around 11.

Mexico Public Safety arrested him on charges of first-degree involuntary man-slaughter and leaving the scene of the accident. Monroe County Prosecutor Nicole Volkert applied for the warrant and Judge Sutherland signed it on Friday.

The arrest comes after Clampitt's SUV hit and killed Cobb on June 13th. Cobb was riding on his lawn mower when the vehicle struck him. Mexico Public Safety says Clampitt's bond was set at $100,000 and he is held at the Audrain County Jail. Clampitt is a lawyer with the Mexico law firm Brett, Erdel, Clampitt and Owings.

Last month, Cobb's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Clampitt. And earlier this month he admitted to a Mexico radio station he was the driver of the SUV that hit Cobb.

Cobb's family spoke out shortly after Clampitt's confession in early July.

"I feel a lot of ways," said Cobb's brother Shawn Hill. "I feel angry, you know, hurt. The man took my brother's life."

"For somebody to sit here and drive and hit somebody and not stop and just keep going is heartless," said Cobb's wife Marci.

KOMU spoke with Richard Cobb's brother, Jason Cobb, on Friday. He said the family is glad justice is being done.  Employees at Clampitt's office did not want to comment on the arrest.
