COLUMBIA - The murder trial against Nicholas Thomas, one of the men accused of killing Tre'veon Marshall continued Thursday. Prosecutors brought up new evidence that Thomas may have been communicating with one of the other suspects in the case while in jail.

Joshua Murray, the other man being charged with murder in the case, took the stand Thursday. The prosecution said Thomas and Murray had cells next to each other in the Boone County Jail.

The state also presented letters that Murray claims came from Thomas. The letters included statements such as, "write a false statement," and "let me clear this."

Defense Attorney David Wallis tried to build a case for a "not guilty" decision during cross examination of Murray. Murray told Wallis he and Nicholas Thomas had no discussion of shooting and killing Marshall and said he only thought they were going to jump him.

Murray also said Thomas did not know who Tre'Veon Marshall was and had to ask to be sure. Wallis also used his cross examination to try and hurt Murray's credibility.

There were a few discrepancies between Murray's testimony in court and the record from his proffer interview with law enforcement. Here is a brief exchange between Wallis and Murray:

Wallis: "So you lied during your proffer?"
Murray: "I didn't lie, I was forgetful."
Wallis: "You were forgetful? Are you forgetful today?"
Murray: "No, sir."

Murray also said he heard Thomas tell a friend "I got my tear drop," a reference to a tattoo symbolizing murder.

Columbia police found 17-year-old Tre'veon Marshall dead near McKee Park on July 14, 2013. Officers arrested Thomas in August in connection with the murder of Marshall, a former Hickman High School student. Joshua Murray was also arrested in connection with the murder. Both men are being charged with first-degree murder. Murray's trial will begin in August.

The third suspect arrested in connection with the the crime was Kimberly Huett-Linzie. She testified Wednesday that she drove Thomas and Murray to McKee Park the night of the shooting.
