Local Accountants Busy As Tax Deadline Approaches
COLUMBIA - Taxes are due in just a couple of weeks on April 15, but local accounting offices are still busy helping many clients that have waited until now to do their taxes.
Accounting Plus in Columbia is holding special hours during tax season, staying open until 8 p.m.
Fay Stine, a tax preparer for Accounting Plus, said residents should not rush to get their taxes filed by the deadline. If you are having trouble making the deadline you do not have to file your entire return by April 15. Stine said you just have to file for an extension.
"The only thing about an extension is that they must know is that they have to have their taxes paid," Stine said.
Stine's other tips include:
1. Double-check the math. The IRS states mistakes in calculations are a common problem in tax files.
2. Make sure you get all the deductions and credits you can including charitable gifts, college costs and state income taxes.
3. If you cannot pay, you can take out a loan or use a credit card. The cost might be lower than the interest and penalties from the IRS.
