Man accused of driving into floodwaters pleads not guilty in death of fiance
COLUMBIA - A Chariton County man charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of his fiance has pleaded not guilty.
Police said James Pleasant, 45, drove past a Route M barricade barricade into flood waters covering the roadway on May 31. His fiance, 32-year-old Alicia Meyer, was trapped in the car.
Court documents said Pleasant escaped through the trunk, but Meyer, who had disabilities, was trapped and drown.
Pleasant's next hearing is scheduled for June 25. He is at the Chariton County jail on $50,000 cash only bond.
