Police said 49-year-old Randall Goff died Monday after being stabbed in the fight with a man who intervened. Goff went into the office of apartment manager John Pitluck and asked for change, then threatened him with a pocket knife. Goff had been living there for about a month. A 41-year-old man who moving into the building heard Pitluck's calls for help intervened. Goff was fatally stabbed in the ensuing struggle. Police questioned and released the man -- Pitluck called him a hero. Police said Goff had a history of mental illness. Relatives said he had stopped taking his medication. No one was injured in the fire, which erupted after Goff doused a store counter with gasoline and ignited it.
