Man flees police, causes wrong-way U.S. 54 crash killing three
JEFFERSON CITY - Three people died in a crash Sunday afternoon in Cole County while a driver fled from police in a stolen vehicle, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
It happened just around noon on U.S. 54 near Goller Road.
According to a crash report, Demarius Rubin, 29, was travelling westbound in the eastbound lane when he struck another car head-on. Bernard Steffel, 91, and Marilyn Steffel, 89, were in the other car.
Steffel's vehicle overturned in the median after hitting the other car, according to the crash report.
Troop F said in a tweet Rubin was fleeing from Jefferson City police in a stolen vehicle when he purposefully crossed through the median into the eastbound lanes.
All three subjects were pronounced dead on the scene before 1 p.m.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F said both lanes of the highway had reopened around 4 p.m.
