ST. LOUIS (AP) — A 23-year-old man has been sentenced in the beating death of his 23-month-old stepdaughter in St. Louis.

KMOV-TV reported Friday that Deonte Evans was sentenced to 18 years in prison in the February 2014 death of Jabria Phillips. Evans had been found guilty earlier this year of second-degree murder, child abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

Court documents say Evans killed the child when he punished her for reportedly eating a piece of cake without permission. Jabria suffered injuries to her internal organs from blows to her torso.

Authorities said that the child's mother failed to immediately report her daughter's injuries, and she faces a charge of endangering the welfare of a child in the case.
