Man Killed Crossing Highway 63
The Highway patrol says 52-year-old John Gregg was trying to cross 63 and get to his home at the Sunset Mobile Home Park.
A car hit him in the southbound lanes, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In November, another man was hit and killed at almost the exact same place.
The last pedestrian death was in early November, and it involved similar circumstances. Gerald Wimmer was crossing Highway 63 from the mobile home park to go to Blue Acres Convenience Store.
Wimmer died at the scene. Pedestrians often cross Highway 63 from the mobile home park to get the Blue Acres Convenience Store.
This stretch of road has had several accidents.
In the accident on Wednesday that killed John Gregg, the driver suffered only minor injuries and refused treatment.
He will not be charged in this accident. A witness who said he heard the accident, came running to help. He said he doesn't understand why local government can't make things safer for drivers and walkers.
"That maybe they need to put in some kind of a pedestrian walkway over 63 to help alleviate some of this problem," said Randell Blake who was a witness to the accident. "I mean how many more people have to get killed before they finally decide to do something."
After the last death, bikers and walkers were back out the very next day crossing the road again.
Residents at the Sunset Mobile Home Park also said something needs to be done.
