Manhunt for man known to carry weapons called off in Maries County
MARIES COUNTY - Maries, Osage and Miller county sheriff's departments called off the search Thursday for a man known to carry weapons after a chase through the night.
The Maries County Sheriff's Department began chasing Vernon Phelps, a 48-year-old from Rolla, early Thursday morning. Sheriff Chris Heitman said he had multiple active felony warrants and was a suspect in vehicle thefts in the area.
Phelps led authorities from Maries, Osage and Miller counties across the Sugar Creek outside Meta, where a patrol car hit the bridge. Authorities backed off the bridge to recover, and Phelps continued.
Deputies found Phelps' car wrecked on the other side of the bridge, but he had ran from the scene.
Authorities searched the area through the morning, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol searched from the air.
Maries, Miller and Osage county sheriff's departments called off the search after six hours. Law enforcement officials continued to search the area Thursday afternoon, but there was no official search in place.
