Marshall Murders Shock Neighbors
Neighbors say the victims, Richard and and Jessie Shepard, were nice people who kept to themselves. One neighbor, David Riley, can't understand why anyone would kill them, and he thinks it will be hard for the small town to deal with their deaths.
"Obviously, that's disturbing when your world is shattered by something like that," he said, "especially something so close, literally in your own backyard."
Police said someone beat the Shepards to death.
"This was a brutal crime. It's a home invasion," said officer Brad Bartlett. "This elderly couple in their 70s was brutally attacked, and then their house set on fire."
While the Major Case Squad continues to investigate, Riley said he'll try to meet his other neighbors.
"When something like this does occur, it makes you pause to think about who your neighbors are," he explained, "and maybe you should take the time to get to know the folks that are around you."
The Rural Missouri Major Case Squad consists of State Highway Patrol troopers and officers from various police departments.
