COLUMBIA - Celebrated poet and civil rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou spoke at MU Thursday night. Angelou shared inspirational words and poems in front of a sold out crowd in Jesse Auditorium. The university brought Angelou as a part of its diversity efforts. MU Student Jeremy Ellis is humbled the university afforded him the opportunity to see Angelou.
"It's not often that you get to see such a phenomenal speaker and I think it's amazing that we could actually get her to come and speak tonight. It's really touching," Ellis said.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Angelou now teaches at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. She is best known for her inspirational poem, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."
