McCaskill Courts Small Farmers
"I think this is an important fight to wage right now, the fight for the independent producer and the small family farmer," McCaskill told an open forum for farmers. "It's important to who we are as a nation and who we certainly are as a state, and they need somebody who's willing to take on the big guys and fight for them."
Brengarth is a third-generation farmer whose son wants to follow in his footsteps. But, they face tough competition because meat packers usually buy from corporate farms.
"I'm just a drop in the bucket compared to them," admitted Brengarth.
In addition to fighting corporate competition, McCaskill told farmers she will fight to protect them from federal animal ID restrictions. She also supports expanding the ethanol market for the state's corn.
McCaskill's opponent in next month's Democratic primary election is Bill Clinton Young of Kansas City.
