Bird Watch:

Friday marks the first day of the 15th annual Great Backyard Bird Count. All you have to do is take part is count birds in your backyard, outside your office window or at a local park. You can enter your data online for a chance to win prizes. Some of the prizes include bird feeders, binoculars and a chirping clock.

Veteran Donation:

Representatives of Veterans United Foundation will be presenting the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital with a $20,000 gift at 4 p.m. Friday. The foundation is a local, non-profit organization that works to improve veterans' lives.

They are visiting the hospital during the "National Salute to Veteran Patients" to distribute valentines. Hospital officials say the donation comes as a surprise.

School Donation:

The Hamels Foundation will present a $50,000 check to the Eldon School District Friday. The district expects the grant to help build its new sports complex.

Philadelphia Phillies 2008 World Series MVP pitcher Cole Hamels founded the organization.

Business Leaders:

Tipton R-VI will host a Future Business Leaders of America district contest Friday. The FBLA helps students prepare for careers in business. Organizers expect approximately 350 students from 20 different schools to attend the contest.

According to Tipton Public Schools, workshops and the contest will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Polar Plunge:

Special Olympics of Missouri will host the Polar Plunge Saturday to benefit athletes. Registration the day of the event runs from noon to 2 p.m. at Stephens Lake Park in Columbia. Participants are encouraged to dress in costume. KOMU 8's Michelle Bogowith will also be judging a costume contest.

Chili Cookoff:

The seventh MFA oil annual Rootin'-Tootin' Chili Cookoff is also Saturday at the Holiday Inn Expo Center. More than 50 different teams will cook a minimum of six gallons of chili. Attendees can sample all of the chili available from 4-7 p.m. All proceeds will go directly to the Boys and Girls Club of Columbia and will help with tutoring and career development.
