Mid-Missouri has Gone Four Loko
COLUMBIA- A caffeinated energy drink called Four Loko is now on the shelves of more than 100 stores in Mid-Missouri. The malt beverage contains 12 percent alcohol and is the equivalent to taking multiple shots in just one can.
Four Loko is a fruit flavored drink available in nine flavors. Vendors in Columbia say there's been a spike in sales of the drink and estimate they may sell upwards of 10-12 cases a week of it.
Students are also taking notice.
"Everybody I know around me has either tried Four Loko once or drinks Four Loko a lot," said MU student Ryan Campbell.
One of the main issues of Four Loko is the fact that it mixes caffeine, a stimulant drug, with alcohol, a depressant.
"There's two different kinds of drugs battling inside their bodies trying to see which one is going to win. What is going to happen is they may feel more wide awake but they're in fact going to be intoxicated and they may not realize it," said MU Wellness Resource Center Officer Kim Dude.
Jaisen Freeman, President and Managing Partner of Phusion Projects, LLC, the company that owns and distributes Four Loko released a statement to KOMU this afternoon. The statement provides information that Four Loko has submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration.
It states that Four Loko has received a “GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) notification” for our products. A GRAS notification is an FDA process that entails an objective, comprehensive scientific review and evaluation of the safety of the food additive being considered."
The statement also mentions several other caffeine-alcohol mix drinks that were in existence before Four Loko.
