Minimum Wage Hike Scares Some Businesses
If Congress raises the $5.15 federal minimum wage, Missouri's index-based wage could increase wages even more. Small business owners warned voters that increasing the hourly minimum wage could get out of hand. However, three out of every four voters approved the raise of $1.35 an hour.
"Just because we lost by such a large margin doesn't mean we throw our hands up and walk away," said Dave Overfelt, president of the Missouri Retailers Association. "I know it'd be very difficult, but it's my job to educate lawmakers and policy makers on the long-term impact of this."
