Missouri baseball defeats No. 8 LSU in weekend series
COLUMBIA - The Missouri baseball team won two out of three games over the weekend to claim a series victory over No. 8 LSU.
Mizzou lost game one on Friday in extra innings, 12-11. Mizzou headed into the bottom of the sixth down by three runs. Sophomore catcher Chad McDaniel hit a three-run bomb to tie the game, but both bullpens followed with three shutout innings to force the game into extras. LSU strung several hits together in the top of the 10th to score one run, which Mizzou left unanswered in the bottom half of the inning resulting in the loss.
TJ Sikkema led Mizzou to a 4-1 victory on Saturday, pitching seven innings and giving up only one earned run with 10 strikeouts. Saturday's performance marked Sikkema's second consecutive double-digit strikeout performance and fourth of his career.
All nine batters contributed to Sunday's 11-5 Mizzou victory, each recording a hit in the game. Eight different players produced a run scored and five of them also recorded an RBI.
This series marks the first time Mizzou has defeated LSU at Taylor Stadium. Saturday and Sunday's victories also mark only the second and third time Mizzou has ever defeated LSU, the first victory coming last season in Baton Rouge.
Up next, Mizzou will face Missouri State on Tuesday in Springfield. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
