Missouri has mixed results in home openers Friday
COLUMBIA - Missouri baseball and softball hosted their home openers of the 2017 season Friday. The teams combined to go 2-1 on the night.
No. 24 Missouri softball (8-6) debuted its new stadium and field in the Mizzou Tournament against No. 4 Oregon and Stephen F. Austin. The Tigers struggled against the Ducks, falling 10-3, but responded in game two, defeating the Lumberjacks 14-6.
Tiger starter Madi Norman struggled from the outset, surrendering a two-run home run in the first inning to C Gwen Svekis. Norman gave up seven runs, six earned, through five innings.
Oregon never trailed.
Mizzou cut the Oregon lead in half with a solo homer from Amanda Sanchez in the bottom of the fourth, but the Ducks responded in the next half-inning with five runs of its own.
The second game was mostly flip-flopped as it was the Tigers who jumped out to a 8-1 lead after just two innings against the Lumberjacks.
Starter Cheyenne Baxter went five innings allowing only one earned run. Sanchez was 4-4 with four RBI.
Mizzou baseball (8-1) defeated University of Illinois-Chicago 7-2. Under new head coach Steve Bieser, the Tigers have won eight straight since losing the season opener to Eastern Michigan under.
Preseason All-American starter Tanner Houck earned his first win of the season throwing six innings allowing one unearned run.
Rock Bridge graduate Connor Brumfield was 3-5 with an RBI. Brumfield is batting .457 on the season.
Mizzou softball will continue to host the Mizzou Tournament and baseball will play two more against Illinois-Chicago throughout the weekend.
