JEFFERSON CITY - Secretary of State Jason Kander announced Wednesday morning Missouri moved into the top 10 states for quality and accessibility of elections.

Now ranked 8th in the country, Missouri was ranked 13th before Kander took office.

The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Elections Performance Index examined the 2014 election cycle.

According to Pew, the index is a “comprehensive assessment of election administration in all
50 states and the District of Columbia.”

Missouri was recognized for its performance in five key areas:

  • Online voter registration
  • Data completeness
  • Low rate of voter registration rejections
  • Low rates of provisional ballots cast and rejected
  • Low rates of rejection among military and overseas absentee ballots

Kander said he has worked to make Missouri elections more accessible and efficient since taking office in 2013.

In 2013, he became the first secretary of state to allow Missouri voters to complete and submit a voter registration application online.

In 2014, he debuted the first-of-its-kind Military and Overseas Voting Access Portal. It allows Missourians abroad or serving away to securely register to vote. They can also request and receive absentee ballots for all local, state and federal elections.
