Missouri Promotes Walking to School
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) -- Students throughout Missouri plan to participate in activities to promote the benefits of walking to school.
State transportation officials say they hope the attention will encourage parents and communities to develop walking and cycling programs. October has been designated as walk-to-school month.
Officials say one popular program is called a "walking school bus." Students walk specific routes to their classrooms under adult supervision while picking up additional children along the way. Some communities have developed formal plans with adults agreeing to walk on specific days.
