ROCHEPORT - Missouri River Relief held its first event of the year Tuesday at the Les Bourgeois Bistro. About 30 people gathered to hear Shibu Jose, director of MU Center for Agroforestry, talk about the potential for creating biomass energy from the Missouri River Floodplain. The lecture was a part of the Big Muddy Speaker Series.

Diane Oerly, who grew up along the Missouri River, has been to many of the Big Muddy Speaker Series lectures.

"I've learned a lot of interesting things about the river, the habitat, the hydrology and the history of it," Oerly said.

The Big Muddy Speaker Series will continue the rest of the year on the second Tuesday of each month. Future discussion topics include the science of Missouri River sediment and how biologists restock the endangered Pallid Sturgeon.

A benefit at the Blue Note February 9 will officially kick-off Missouri River Relief's 10th Anniversary. The organization also plans to tow a barge on the Missouri Rive this fall from Kansas City to St. Louis. The barge will stop at various points across the state to participate in river clean-ups.

Since the formation of Missouri River Relief in 2001, the organization has hosted 68 river clean-ups along 667 miles of river. During the events more than 14,000 volunteers helped clean up a total of 592 tons of trash.
