Missouri's Waters Wins Third Big 12 Wrestler of the Week Honor
IRVING, TX -- After a flawless weekend, Missouri sophomore Alan Waters has been tabbed the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for matches from January 30 - February 5. The Kansas City-native recorded two victories over top 15 opponents as the Tigers fell to No. 1 Oklahoma State and downed No. 10 Oklahoma.
This is the third career Big 12 award for Waters, who earned the recognition on December 12 and January 17. He joins current Oklahoma athlete Kendric Maple and former Oklahoma State star Jordan Oliver as the only wrestlers to be honored by the Big 12 three times in one season.
In total, Missouri wrestlers have now won four league weekly awards in one season for the first time in the Big 12 era.
Waters didn't allow a single point on the weekend as he shutout No. 13 Jon Morrison (Oklahoma State), 4-0, on Saturday. The win gave Missouri a 12-9 lead over the Cowboys. The following day, Waters blanked No. 8 Jarrod Patterson (Oklahoma), 7-0, to help build an early lead for the Tigers over OU.
It was the first time Waters has defeated either of these opponents, as he entered the contests with a 0-2 record against both Morrison and Patterson. For the season, Waters is now 22-1 and is undefeated in duals with a 13-0 record.
