JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - A Missouri Senate committee has defeated a proposal to replace vehicle registration tabs on license plates with interior windshield stickers.

The House had passed the measure by a wide margin earlier this month. Supporters have said switching to window stickers would make harder for thieves to steal the tabs.

But a Senate panel voted the measure down 5-4 Wednesday. Republican Sen. Bill Stouffer, of Napton, says some panel members worried that thieves would simply smash windows to get to the tabs instead of tearing them from license plates.

The state Department of Revenue has recently tried to curb theft by issuing tabs that correspond only with a certain license plate, so that authorities will know when stolen tabs are on the wrong car.
