Missouri Softball drops two games to Illinois
St. Charles, Mo. - The Missouri Tigers softball team lost both games of a double-header to rival Illinois Wednesday.
Missouri lost game one 5-2 and lost game two 9-6.
Illinois controlled game one from the beginning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a home run by junior catcher Stephanie Abello. The Tigers were unable to overcome this early deficit due to their lack of offensive production.
The team tallied only six hits in game one and left six runners on base. Freshman Brooke Wilmes and junior Regan Nash both tallied RBIs in the losing effort.
Game two had the same end result for the Tigers, but the team's offense was far more efficient.
The Tigers tallied the same amount of hits as they did in game one but only left three runners on base, resulting in six runs.
Four of these runs came in a seventh inning rally, which was sparked by Catcher Trenity Edwards. Edwards hit a two-RBI double, cutting the Illinois lead to five.
Nash and Braxton Burnside followed up Edwards' double with RBI singles of their own, but that would mark the end of the Tigers' rally.
Burnside led the way for the Tigers offensively. She went 3-4 with three RBIs, two of which came earlier on a double to left field.
The losses dropped the Tigers' record to 16-12 on the year.
Missouri returns home to face No. 23 Mississippi State in a three game series. Game one is on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
