COLUMBIA - The Missouri Symphony Orchestra's 11th annual Hot Summer Nights Festival begins Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Stephens Lake Park Amphitheater. The Festival has 24 different events running from June 5 to July 12.

The event is also the second leg of the Stephens Lake Park Concert Series held at the amphitheater once a month from May to September. Hot Summer Nights has held its opening concert during this series' June event for the past three years.

Lili Vianello, president of the board of the Missouri Symphony Society, said this event, "Strike up the Band," will feature different samples of upcoming Hot Summer Nights events. She said she encourages people of all ages to attend the free event.

"Supporting the Missouri Symphony Society and the Hot Summer Nights Festival is important to the economic and cultural development of our community," Vianello said. "I hope they will come out to support another one of these wonderful festivals."

Kirk Trevor is the symphony's maestro, and he'll be at the helm for Thursday's event.

Vianello said in the June 19th's event, the orchestra will perform in conjunction with the silent film "The Strong Man." This will be the first time in the history of the festival that the orchestra has accompanied a silent movie.
