COLUMBIA - Missouri Task Force 1 is in Kinston, North Carolina waiting for its next mission.

The task force's leader said the people in North Carolina have been welcoming and grateful.

"They're taking good care of us, the support from the locals and state assets have just been wonderful," Sanders said.

The task force just got done helping in Brunswick County, near Wilmington, where it conducted targeted searches for residents and pets. Hurricane Florence made landfall near that area Sept. 14.

While there, the team rescued or evacuated 394 residents and rescued 33 pets.

The team also performed more than 1,000 wellness checks and accessed hundreds of structures.

Sanders said the experience was humbling.

"Even though all that is going on they still shake our hand, hug us and thank us," Sanders said. "Even in the rain they still come up to us and say 'Thank you for being there, thanks for coming down and leaving your families.' So that's pretty humbling."

"We're very proud of our mission and what we accomplished," Sanders said.

Sanders added the weather conditions during Hurricane Florence were terrible.

"I think the storm was moving two miles an hour, so just pounding them with wind and rain," Sanders said.

Sanders said their job isn't done just yet.

"When North Carolina is finished with our work, we'll start the process of going home," he said.
