Mixed Results for Holiday Shopping
"I had a little bit of Christmas shopping left to do," she said.
And revenue from Kurzejeski and other holiday shoppers is paying off for some downtown stores.
"Business is spectacular," said Barbara McCormick, the owner of Poppy.
Other downtown businesses have not been as fortunate.
"That snow just killed everything," said Columbia Photo's general manager Patrick Marks. "Of course, we were dead business that whole weekend which always hurts."
According to the National Retail Federation, about 20 percent of stores' business occurs in November and December.
"December, usually we get probably about five times the amount of traffic and easily two to two-and-a-half times the amount of sales," said Marks.
Many downtown Columbia businesses have extended their hours to 8 p.m. until Christmas.
