COLUMBIA - Mid-Missouri residents looking for ways to assist in the relief efforts for those afflicted by Sunday's devastating tornado in Joplin, Mo., can donate children's food and sanitary items and stuffed animals on Wednesday on the east side of the Hearnes Center.

Bins will be set up Wednesday on the east concourse of the Hearnes and the goods will be transported on Thursday morning.

Mizzou Basketball Head Coach Frank Haith and staffers will drive to Joplin on Thursday to donate the items, along with other supplies, in support of the United Way's "United for Joplin" campaign. Children's items such as diapers, baby wipes, formula, stuffed animals, etc. are in need.

"The images of the destruction in Joplin are absolutely devastating," Head Coach Frank Haith said. "But at the same time, the sight of neighbor helping neighbor serves as inspiration for us all. We can't change what happened on Sunday night, but if we can make life a little easier, you better believe we are going to try and do it."

Other ways to assist the United Way's recovery efforts include texting the word JOPLIN to 864833. That will trigger a $10 donation, which will be added to your cell phone bill. Mizzou Athletics also have "One State. One Spirit. One Mizzou." shirts on-sale, with all of the proceeds going to support the United Way's United for Joplin campaign. Coach Haith and the Missouri staffers will be wearing these shirts on Thursday.

For Mid-Missourians unable to donate items on Wednesday, there will be donation bins set up in the parking lot of the Columbia Mall (outside of Sears) at 9 a.m. Fry-Wagner Moving will transport all donated items such as blankets, pillows, small amounts of clothing, toilet paper, tooth brushes, diapers, bottled water, and factory-sealed food items to the Joplin Salvation Army.
