Mizzou downs Kansas 7-6 to advance to Super Sectional
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou softball's Kirsten Mack hit a grand slam and a double, driving in a career high five runs, to help the Tigers down Kansas 7-6 Sunday and advance to the NCAA Super Regional against UCLA.
Sophomore P Cheyenne Baxter got the win in the circle for the Tigers, scattering four hits and allowing four unearned runs in 4.2 innings of work. Freshman P Paige Lowary earned her fourth save of the season.
Kansas broke out to an early lead in the first with a pair of runs in the bottom frame. C Jessie Roane hit a single, with two outs and loaded bases, to plate the first run. Another Jayhawk single pushed the lead to 2-0.
Mizzou would take the lead at the top of the second with three hits. A HBP from freshman DP Amanda Sanchez, followed by senior SS Corrin Genovese's walk put runners on first and second. Mack hit a double to score Sanchez from second, while senior 3B Angela Randazzo brought Genovese home. Mack ran home on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Tigers.
At the top of the third, with two outs and bases loaded, Mack struck again this time scoring a grand slam to make the score read 7-2 in favor of the Tigers. Her homer was a team-leading 15th blast for the sophomore.
Kansas closed the score to 7-6 with a four-run sixth. Three Tiger errors, a HB and a walk brought the runs in for the Jayhawks.
Lowary was able to make the save in the seventh working around a one-out walk to send the Tigers to Super Regionals against UCLA.
