BURLINGTON, IA -- The Missouri Golf program won its second consecutive event to open the fall campaign on Tuesday as the Tigers raced to an eight-shot win at the Fourth Annual Golfweek Conference Challenge on Tuesday afternoon in Burlington, Iowa.
The Fourth Annual Golfweek Conference Challenge was played at the Spirit Hollow Golf Club in Burlington. The field consisted of 15 teams from 15 different conferences and the Tigers (-7) won the event by eight shots over Wake Forest (+1) of the ACC.
Head Coach Mark Leroux's club has been one of the country's best in the early season and senior Jace Long continued to lead that group, recording his second individual win of the fall and ninth of his career. Long (-9), a native of Dixon, Mo., finished the tournament with a 2-under-par 70 to earn a two stroke win over Chris Worrell (Tulsa) and Steven Ihm (Iowa).
Long now has nine career collegiate tournament victories, the most all-time in school history and through six rounds of play this fall he boasts an incredible scoring average of 68.0.
The victory also marked the 14th of Leroux's career at Mizzou. Leroux has coached the Tigers to 11 wins since the 2009-10 season, including two more crowns in 2012-13. In all Leroux has led Missouri to multiple wins in four consecutive seasons.
While Long earned the individual win, balanced play fueled the team victory. All-five Tigers finished among the Top 30 and four finished among the Top 15. Sophomore Ryan Zech (-2) was the low Tiger on Tuesday shooting a 3-under-par 69. He finished sixth overall with a 2-under-par 214. Hunter Kraus was 12th with rounds of 73-70-74 and junior Emilio Cuartero was 15th with consistent rounds of 73-74-73. Freshman Jacob Fair played well once again in his second event shooting 75-76-73--224 to tie for 29th.
Missouri returns to action Sept. 29-30 at the CHAMP Patriot Intercollegiate in Lorton, Va. The event is hosted by George Mason University.
