Mizzou's Hudyn Named to Canadian Junior National Team
TORONTO -- Incoming freshman, Michelle Hudyn, has been selected as one of 12 student-athletes in Canada to represent her country as a member of the Canadian Junior Women's National Team as announced by Canada Basketball. The team will compete in the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Gurabo, Puerto Rico from August 15-19.
"I am very excited to be playing with the Canadian Junior Women's National Team for the first time this year," Hudyn said. "I will be playing as a four on the floor and I am looking forward to contributing a lot while with the team. It is an honor to be able to wear Canada across my chest as we travel to Puerto Rico after our ten day training camp this August."
Coached by Andy Sparks, head women's basketball coach at the University of Ottawa, the Canadian Junior Women's National Team is one of eight teams who will compete in Puerto Rico. The women will face tough competition in the preliminary round as they have been placed in Group B and will face Brazil, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The top two teams will advance to the semifinal round.
Canada will need a top-four finish at the tournament in order to qualify for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women which will be held in Lithuania. The Canadian Junior Women's National Team has medaled in this event in four consecutive years.
