Mizzou's Rachel Updike Selected for Norman Regional

COLUMBIA - Sophomore Rachel Updike will head to Norma, Oklahoma to compete in the 2013 NCAA Regional Championship on April 6. The event will take place in the Lloyd Noble Center at the University of Oklahoma. This marks the 14th consecutive season that head coach Rob Drass has seen at least one gymnast advance to the NCAA Regional Competition. As a team the Tigers have made 12 NCAA Regional appearances under Drass' direction, and he has seen four Tigers advance to the championship as individual competitors.

"We are very proud of Rachel and of our team as a whole," head coach Rob Drass said. "We have done a great job overcoming adversity this season, and I think our girls have shown great resilience. Rachel is a tough competitor and has worked hard to compete among the best in the nation, this opportunity is well deserved."

Teams joining Updike at the 2013 ­­­­Oklahoma Regional will include Oklahoma, Stanford, Penn State, Washington, Iowa and Southern Utah. There will also be five all-around competitors from non-qualifying schools as well as individual event qualifiers participating in the each regional competition. Also competing in ­­­­Norman will be Samantha King (Illinois State), Taryn Vanderpool (SEMO), Catherine Dion (UIC), Kim Genereux (Illinois State), Chantel Turk (UIC), Courtney Cochefski (TWU) and Kristin Edwards (TWU).

The top two finishing teams and top two all-around competitors at the Regional Championship will advance to the 2013 NCAA National Championship in Los Angeles, Calif. In addition, the event winners at each regional site advance to the national championships (only in that specific event) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.

The NCAA National Championship will take place on April 19-21 at the historic Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus. Semifinal team and all-around competition will be conducted in two sessions Friday, April 19. The top-three teams from each semifinal will advance to the Super Six competition Saturday, April 20. The top four individuals from each semifinal in each event (including ties) from Friday's competition will compete in the individual-event championships Sunday, April 21.
