MKT Trail section closing for bridge replacement
COLUMBIA – Crews will shut down a section of the MKT Trail for several months to replace outdated bridges.
The quarter-mile section of the trail from the southwest of Stadium Boulevard underpass to a connector trail near White Oak Lane will close starting Monday and is planned to reopen in March depending on weather.
Workers will replace three bridges along the closed trail, each of which are more than 120 years old.
Commuters who use the trail to get to and from the city will need to use detours. Columbia provided a detour map that recommends using roads and pathways to either Forum Boulevard or White Oak Lane to get to Stadium Boulevard and go along the road to where the trail opens again.
Park Services Manager Gabe Huffington said the seasonal timing of the project was intentional.
“During the spring, summer and fall, we know the trails can be very busy, so we try to do this type of work in the winter when we try to mitigate the number of people that we interfere with in terms of the trail system,” he said.
Huffington said the trail’s closure can allow Columbia residents to look for new trails.
“If you're a recreational trail user and you're just looking to bike or run or walk on an afternoon, visit the trail directory and go find another trail in Columbia,” he said. “You might find that you actually like one of those better in terms of the scenery or the amenities that are close to it.”
The city’s Park Sales Tax approved by voters in 2015 will fund the construction project.
