Mo. Auditor Blasts Paper After Critical Editorial
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich has taken the unusual step of calling a Capitol press conference for the sole purpose of lambasting a newspaper that wrote an editorial criticizing him.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch published an editorial Tuesday criticizing Schweich's recent lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Gov. Jay Nixon's budget cuts. The newspaper said Schweich's lawsuit reveals that he believes his own office budget -- which sustained a $300,000 budget cut -- is more important than providing money for Joplin to rebuild after a deadly tornado.
At a news conference later Tuesday, Schweich accused the newspaper of being "corrupt" and "dishonest" by suggesting he doesn't care about the people of Joplin.
The Post-Dispatch said it stands by its editorial and accused Schweich of using "baseless, inflamed rhetoric."
