Mo. Guard Airlift Wing has New Commander
ST. JOSEPH (AP) - The Missouri National Guard's 139th Airlift Wing has a new commander.
Col. Michael Pankau has been serving as acting commander since the spring. Maj. Gen. Stephen Danner, adjutant general of the Missouri National Guard, has appointed him to post on a permanent basis, effective immediately.
Pankau is a native of St. Joseph, where the 139th Airlift Wing is based at Rosecrans Air National Guard Base. He's the 10th commander of the unit that got its start in Europe during in World War II and now deploys troops to Iraq and elsewhere.
Pankau's overseas deployments have included Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He has also commanded the Advanced Airlift Tactics Training Center at Rosecrans and Task Force 139, which has been protecting communities in northwest Missouri during the record flooding.
