Barnes is not a member of Zion Lutheran Church, but he said that doesn't matter.

"Anything that helps to build the sense of community, the sense of service, the sense of outreach, is good," he explained.

And, how many people did the church serve?

"Hopefully in the ballpark of 300, 350," said Vance Downing of the Outreach Committee.

"One of the theological rules, there's a doctrine of the Lutheran faith that must be understood, wherever Lutherans meet, Lutherans eat," Barnes added.

Church leaders hope Thursday's Thanksgiving gathering is the start of a new tradition in Moberly.
