MOBERLY - Guardian Oak has helped save the lives of more than 500 horses, but now the woman behind it all needs help keeping the rescue running because she has advancing multiple sclerosis.

Sherri Crider said she had to carry 50 pound bags of grain and throw hay bales by herself through the winter.

"With MS, I have a cup full of energy a day and I have a gallon of work and things I need to attend to," Crider said.

Crider said she weighs less than 100 pounds and makes do with a broken tractor.

"I'm driving a tractor that really takes quite a lot to get around," Crider said. "It gets stuck a lot. I push a wheelbarrow with scooping poop."

Guardian Oak needs more volunteers and additional funding to help Crider run the rescue.

The horse rescue is in the process of applying for tax-exempt status as a non-profit organization, known as a 501(c)(3), Crider said. "It takes a lot to do that."

But Crider said it's a lot of work in addition to taking care of the horses.

"I don't have time to write this stuff for the 501, because, I mean, energy wise," Crider said.

Crider said she initially had a partner to help with the horses.

"We had another place and we were really up and going, and our partner bailed on us. And in doing so, we essentially became homeless," Crider said.

She said she moved forward and relocated the rescue, but now she is getting sicker and needs more help.

"I have a lot of weakness," Crider said. "I fall a lot. I have a lot of trouble walking any distance."

Her daughter, Victoria Crider, said the illness has not stopped Sherri Crider from running the rescue.

"My mom has given up a lot and done a lot for a lot of people," Victoria Crider said.

The Guardian Oak website said its mission is to serve the healing and sanctuary needs of at-risk and under-served animals and people through therapeutic, creative, and recreational activities.

Sherri Crider said it is important to keep the horse rescue open so she can continue to give people the opportunity to heal with horses.

"I know that this program could do wonderful things in the community," Crider said. "For veterans and children."

Jessica Rutherford is a volunteer and her daughter, who is on the autism spectrum, also volunteers at Guardian Oak.

"Since my daughter has come to Guardian Oak, her attitude has changed," Rutherford said. "She has opened up, she's pretty much blossomed out."

Crider said she will do anything to keep Guardian Oak operating so she can continue to help children like Rutherfords'.

"It's just really important to me, that while I can, I finish what I start," Crider said.

Donations can be made via PayPal to [email protected] or at Guardian Oak's YouCaring page.

Below is Guardian Oak's current wish list. Contact the rescue at 660-372-1595. The address is County Road 2235, Moberly, MO 65270.
