Moberly Police: Man arrested after wrestling gun from officer
MOBERLY - A Moberly man was behind bars Thursday after police said he attempted to wrestle an officer's gun away from him and got into a fight with police.
Moberly Police said they pulled over 33-year-old Derek Birge on Franklin Street late Tuesday after identifying him for having an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Officers were searching Birge for drugs when they said he tensed up and tried to get away. During the search, officers found evidence of methamphetamine.
While attempting to get Birge in the patrol car, officers said Birge began assaulting one of the two officers on scene and attempted to grab the officer's weapon.
Moberly police said in a Facebook post the suspect never removed the gun from the holster, despite earlier reports that indicated he had. The second officer then pushed the suspect free and the original officer punched the suspect and got his gun back.
Prosecutors charged Birge Wednesday with assault, armed criminal action, escaping custody with a deadly weapon, and drug possession.
