Moberly Pre-Schools Get Help
Jim Morgan is the Grand Master of the Moberly Masons. Last December, he was rushed to the hospital with kidney failure just as the Masons were collecting money for their charity.
"Right after the dinner, while the money was still coming in, I had to go to the hospital," explained Morgan, "and I was there over a month."
While Morgan recuperated, his Mason brothers continued his mission by raising $1,300 for local pre-schools.
"Everybody just come together," said Moberly Mason Hurschell Lain. "All the lodges around here. Kayrow, Old Welton, Moberly, they just jumped in and helped."
Thanks to the money collected at their December chili dinner, the Masons could buy supplies for six pre-schools in Moberly.
"One of the big things is underwear," said Lain. "Believe it or not, about 60%-70% of these kids that go to pre-school, their parents don't have the money to. They're underprivileged."
Tuesday, the Masons gave their donations to teachers from the six pre-schools.
"It's wonderful. It's just nice to give the parents a break. They pay enough for child care," said Brandi Kitchen, director of Caring for Kids Family Center. "Child care is very expensive and they pay enough for it. And then, when we have to go back and ask for construction paper, it's hard. They really shouldn't have to provide that."
Morgan still deals with his kidney disease, but he set his needs aside to help those in greater need.
