Montee Defends Audit Timing
JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Auditor Susan Montee says she has no plans to increase, or cut back, on audits as the November election nears. At a fundraiser featuring President Barack Obama earlier this summer, Montee told a crowd of mostly fellow Democrats that she "might have frontloaded a few" audits for release before the election. But Montee now tells The Associated Press she did not actually do so. She says there is no real logistical way she could have.
Former Auditor Claire McCaskill -- who now is a U.S. senator -- suspended the release of audits a month before her re-election in 2002 and a month before her unsuccessful gubernatorial election in 2004.
Montee says she does not plan to do that.
