SPRINGFIELD - Missouri State University officials don't buy out faculty members very often, but when they do it's costly. Two buyouts within a three-week period this year cost the Springfield school more than $430 thousand dollars. MSU says it averages less than two buyouts per year. In March professor Michael Hendrix got more than $173 thousand dollars to leave the school after he was identified as a registered sex offender. Former women's basketball coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson received more than $257 thousand dollars when she resigned with two years remaining on her contract with the university. She left the school for an assistant coach's job at the University of Washington. School officials defend the practice, saying it helps the university avoid possible costly litigation when compared to a one-time hit to the operating budget.
