MU Alumna Winemaker Travels Back to Mizzou
COLUMBIA - The MU University Club held a wine and dine event to host alumn and established winemaker Susan Lueker.
Lueker said while she was at MU, she did not take many classes having to do with winemaking, but after graduating she traveled to California to pursue a graduate program in enology, the science of winemaking. Lueker said she is one of the few female winemakers in the world.
"It's changing, I think the last study I saw, only twenty percent of winemakers were women," she said.
Alumni, current students, and other members of the winemaking community were happy to welcome her back to Columbia.
" She's really become successful in the wine industry as a winemaker and she's kind of our local hero here," said Dave Coble, a wine supervisor for Major Brand Distributors in Columbia.
A few female enology students were in attendance, saying Lueker inspired them to enter the field of winemaking.
