MU Extends Deadline for Bids on University Village Demolition
COLUMBIA - The University of Missouri announced Friday it has extended the deadline for companies to submit bids for the demolition of the University Village apartments.
Initially, MU said bids would be opened June 12. MU spokesperson Christian Basi clarified to KOMU 8 News that the bidding process began several weeks ago. He said bids are sealed initially until they become public and at that point they are physically opened in order to make competition for bids fair. That initial deadline was June 12.
Basi said the university decided to extend the bidding deadline to accommodate concerns some companies had because of asbestos and hazardous material removal that would add to the cost of demolition.
The apartments will close June 30 in response to a walkway collapse February 22 that killed former Columbia firefighter, Lt. Bruce Britt. Demolition is expected to begin in mid-July.
