MU LGBTQ Center hosts its own Family Weekend celebration
COLUMBIA - The MU LGBTQ community continues to spread love and support this family weekend.
The MU LGBTQ Resource Center had a family weekend celebration of its own today in front of the MU Student Center.
Members, families and community organizations all gathered to play tailgating games, hang out and spread the message of acceptance.
"We wanted to bring in our Columbia community partners to show that our community of LGBT community is also a family. So we have support not just on campus but in our community and our town at large that even if you don't have a supportive family of origin, you have this entire network of people happy to be your family and give you love," said MU LGBTQ Resource Center Advisor, Struby Stuble.
According to Struble, the even'ts ultimate purpose is to encourage MU families to accept their daugthers and sons as they are.
"I've been most excited about all of the families stopping by, either as allies or pick up the "Proud of my lesbian daughter", "Proud of my gay son" [pins]. Like, seeing the parents and the families stop by and show that excitement for their students is just... it's everything we wanted," Struble said.
