MU's Relay for Life goes all night to fight cancer
COLUMBIA — The University of Missouri campus will be up all night raising awareness for cancer.
Relay for Life of Mizzou kicked off Friday night on MU's Carnahan Quad. The event is supposed to run from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday morning.
Some participating teams set up tables on the quad to fundraise money for cancer research.
The Missouri Women's Rugby team is one of the participants in the relay. Teammate Ciara Clawson said the team plans on raising money by selling energy bars and allowing people to tackle a few of its players for fun.
While the walk goes on through the night, there will be other activities to keep the festivities going.
“We encourage teams to stay throughout the night,” said Courtney Kirby, a student director for the relay. "Campus never sleeps so we’ll never sleep through the night."
The directors made sure to provide a lot of entertainment to keep people going throughout the night. Kirby said people will teach Zumba and Tiger X fitness classes to keep the energy up.
Some of the other activities include a bounce house, a dunk tank and a craft station. Cards made at the craft station will be donated to those who are going through cancer treatments.
There will also be several ceremonies throughout the night, such as the "Luminaria Ceremony" where candles will illuminate paper bags around the quad to remember those who had cancer or still have it.
Aside from the fun activities, Relay for Life of Mizzou focuses on achieving the American Cancer's Society's vision.
"It’s a way to remember, celebrate and fight back for those who have cancer,” said Kirby.
Clare Lammert, an American Cancer Society staff member helping with the event, said the size and scope of this Relay for Life is largely due to the student coordinators' help.
“The students are the ones that should be getting all the credit for this," said Lammert. "They recruit the teams, they encourage the fundraising; they’re superstars.”
The theme for night, "Kicking Cancer Out of This World," is all about outer space.
