Murder suspects plead to lesser charges
CAMDENTON (AP) - Two people accused of killing a central Missouri couple have pleaded to drug offenses, avoiding trial on charges of second-degree murder.
Thirty-year-old Mandy Mitchell and 47-year-old Garland Mitchell, both of Jefferson City, were arrested in February 2013 in the deaths of Freddie and Carol Wilson.
The Mitchells told investigators they drove to the victims' home in Versailles to obtain prescription drugs but that another man - Derrell Spellmeyer - went into the house and killed the Wilsons.
Mandy Mitchell pleaded guilty Monday to a drug charge and received a 12-year sentence. Garland Mitchell entered an Alford plea to the same charge, not admitting guilt but conceding that prosecutors had enough evidence to gain a conviction. He was sentenced to eight years.
Spellmeyer pleaded guilty earlier to second-degree murder.
