MVC Soccer Teams Split Doubleheader with Avila
MARSHALL, MO -- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's soccer teams split conference matchups at home Saturday evening against Avila University
The Lady Vikings hung tough with Avila through the first half, taking a 0-0 score into the halftime break. However, two second half goals, including one penalty kick, for Avila was enough to knock off the Lady Vikings by a 2-0 score.
The loss drops the Lady Vikings to 2-3-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play and 8-7-1 overall, while Avila improves to 3-4 in conference play and 10-7-1 overall on the season. MVC now sits in fifth place in the HAAC standings, with only one more game left on the regular season. The top six teams in the HAAC qualify for the conference postseason tournament.
The No. 11 ranked men's soccer team scored the game's first two goals, and had to withstand an Avila comeback attempt earning a 2-1 victory.
Getting the Vikings on the board in the first half was Freshman Midfielder Carlos Berastain (Palma De Mallorca, Spain) in the 17th minute. Making it 2-0 game for MVC was Junior Forward Nicholas Alexander (Manchester, England), scoring just three minutes into the second half. Avila would find the net in the 53rd minute, but could not put another shot in the back of the net to extend the game.
With the win MVC improves to 5-1 in HAAC play and 11-4-1 overall. Avila falls to 16 in conference play and 6-12 overall. MVC could win the regular season conference championship outright with a victory over Baker University Tuesday.
The two teams will wrap up their regular seasons Tuesday by traveling to Baldwin City, Kansas, taking on Baker University. Women's game is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the men's game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
