COLUMBIA - National Voter Registration Day is a nationwide effort to promote citizens to get involved in the election.  But things didn't seem out of the ordinary today as far as voter registration in Columbia.

"This time four years ago, there were at least 400 applicants registering to vote a day.  This year, there's been 200.  At first I thought maybe the applications just weren't getting processed. But they are and we're just not getting the same turnout as last election," said Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren.

Voters have the option to register to vote at the Boone County Clerk's Office, but people can also pick up applications to distribute at other locations.

"Because people can register through mail, online, or with absentee ballots, it's hard to exactly measure how many people applied for registration today, but it wasn't any busier here today," said Noren.

But the Associated Students of The University of Missouri (ASUM) partnered with the Missouri Students Association (MSA) to see that they're getting the city's youth involved.

"We've registered close to 250 people today, which is awesome," said ASUM Campus Director Roshaunda McLean.

The student organizations have gotten almost 3,000 people registered, close to 1/8 of Mizzou's student body.  Their goal is to get 7,000 people registered for this year's election.

Absentee ballots have also been made available today if voters are unable to go to the polls on Election Day.  The absentee ballots can be cast until 5 p.m. on Monday, November 5.
