COLUMBIA - Dan Atwill, a Columbia attorney, was sworn in as Presiding Boone County Commissioner Friday afternoon, only two days after Governor Nixon appointed him to the position.

Atwill, a Democrat, was appointed following the weekend death of Republican Ed Robb who served as presiding commissioner since January.  Robb collapsed Saturday, September 24 after attending his son's birthday party and was pronounced dead later that day.

Following Robb's death, neither the Democratic nor Republican committee submitted names to the governor before he appointed Atwill.  Democrats support Atwill's appointment, but Republicans are unhappy with Nixon's decision.

Republican committeewoman Cheri Reisch said, "Although we understand that time was of the essence, we wish Governor Nixon we would have been given an opportunity to submit a name for the commissioner position."

Reisch went on to say she understands Nixon moved quickly as Northern District Commissioner Skip Elkin will be taking a five-month leave of absence.

In a news release, Nixon said, "I am confident that Dan Atwill can provide the leadership needed as presiding commissioner and I am pleased to appoint him to this position.  I also appreciate the leadership Ed Robb gave to Boone County as presiding commissioner and to the state of Missouri as a legislator."

At the swearing in ceremony Atwill said that he will continue to focus on Robbs' ideas and political projects.  He also hopes to make road improvements and invest money into hospitals.
