New Judge a First for Cole County
In a short ceremony on Thursday, Joyce gave Judge Brown the flags from his former courtroom, a long-time tradition at the courthouse. Joyce starts hearing cases next Tuesday.
"I was the first elected woman, and the only elected woman so far in Cole County, so it's been quite a privilege to be able to serve in Cole County the last 12 years," she said.
During that time, Joyce was an assistant prosecuting attorney and Probate Court judge before becoming a circuit judge.
"It's just a continuation of additional responsibilities," she said. "But, I've been on the budget committee so I've been very familiar with the budget and working with different agencies."
Joyce has already talked with fellow judges Richard Callahan and Tom Sodergren about distribution of cases.
